Library Catalogue Activities Print Page


Open the library catalogue by clicking the Oliver link on any library page.

Open and save a word document called Searching the Catalogue. Copy and paste the entire contents of this box into your new document. 

All questions are to be answered in red on your word document 

There are 4 common ways to search the catalog.

You can search by:

1.   author

2.   title

3.   subject

4.   keyword 



Author Searches

1. Which ones do you think are authors? - highlight them in red

Stephanie Meyer                How to play Chess         Paul Jennings John Marsden         
Diary of a Wimpy KId Derek Landy Jeff Kinney Girlfriend
Taylor Swift Terminator II Skullduggery Pleasant One Direction

 2.  a) Open the library catalogue
      b) Search for the books written by Emily Rodda (try putting the last name first)
      c) How many of Emily Rodda's books do we have in our library?
      d) How many titles on the first page are already on loan? 
      e) Where in the Library would you find Emily Rodda's books (Call Number)?
3. Select an author from the following:
   Steven Herrick, Duncan Ball, Colin Thompson, Suzanne Collins, Robert MuchamoreJohn Flanagan, Roald Dahl, Tamora Pierce, Marlina Marchetta.

      a) Search the catalogue for the books by that author
      b) What is the call number for his or her books?
      c) What is the title of one of those books?

Subject Searches

The subject of a book is what the book, dvd or website is about. Because people may use different words to talk about the same thing, sometimes you will need to try more than one word for a successful search.

Keyword Searches 

In a keyword search you ask the catalogue to search for all the words you type.

Highlight the best keywords for each search (hint: highlight 2   or 3 words for each question):
